The Holloway Women's Building Story
Holloway Prison, a prison for women
Was sold by the Tories for £82 million
The space offered women is one single floor
Trapped under tower blocks, women need more
A story of struggle
A tale of renown
Women fought for the vote
And the law sent them down
Beauty out of Ashes is an organisation that has evolved from the campaign to get a truly transformative legacy Women’s Building built on the former Holloway Prison site, London’s only female prison, opened in 1852 and closed in June 2016.
This animation was made to raise awareness about the needs of women, and to promote discussion around alternatives to the UK’s antiquated and broken Criminal Justice System, and champion preventative support for women at risk, as well as those in the community that require support or a place to network.
The animation aims to show what an innovative sustainable women’s Building might look like, to encourage fundraising and petition support for the campaign; To bring women’s organisations together in the proposed ‘Women’s Floor’ and ultimately for women to buy their own legacy ‘Women’s Building’.
Beauty Out of Ashes was selected to shown in the BELIFF Be Epic London International Film Festival, held August 24-27th 2023.
Beauty out of Ashes was shortlisted for the New York Animation Film Awards 20th October 2023
Beauty out of Ashes was shown at the Camden Community Film Festival on 10th December 2023
